Where groups usually start

  • Los Angeles, CA · Koreatown, Orange County Koreatown (Garden Grove)

The Los Angeles metro area had about 326,000 Korean residents in Pew Research's analysis of 2017-2019 American Community Survey data, the largest of any U.S. metro.

The free LA Korean Festival at Seoul International Park (Normandie and Olympic) says street parking is very limited and provides parking lots with shuttle service, which is a common reason a group might arrange its own coach drop-off.

  • New York, NY / Northern New Jersey · Flushing (Queens), Midtown Manhattan, Fort Lee and Palisades Park (Bergen County, NJ)

The New York metro area had about 220,000 Korean residents in Pew's 2017-2019 ACS analysis, and Wikipedia's compilation of census data lists Palisades Park, NJ as 53.7% Korean in 2022.

A Korean-language operator in the New York area publishes eastern U.S. and Canada coach tours that depart from Flushing, Manhattan or Fort Lee.

  • Washington, DC / Northern Virginia · Centreville, Fairfax County area

The Washington metro area had about 96,000 Korean residents in Pew's 2017-2019 ACS analysis, third among U.S. metros.

Korean Central Presbyterian Church in Centreville, VA reports an average of about 4,600 weekly attendees, the scale at which church events can require multiple coaches.

  • Seattle, WA · Seattle-Tacoma-Bellevue metro

The Seattle metro area had about 67,000 Korean residents in Pew's 2017-2019 ACS analysis, fourth among U.S. metros.

San Francisco is one of the cities that U.S. trade authorities list among the most popular for Korean visitors, alongside Los Angeles, Las Vegas, Seattle and the New York-Washington corridor.

  • Atlanta, GA · Gwinnett County (Duluth, Lawrenceville, Norcross)

The Atlanta metro area had about 51,000 Korean residents in Pew's 2017-2019 ACS analysis, seventh among U.S. metros.

The Korean Festival held at Sugarloaf Mills in Lawrenceville, GA is described as drawing over 100,000 visitors a year.

  • Dallas-Fort Worth, TX · Dallas-Fort Worth metro

The Dallas metro area had about 41,000 Korean residents in Pew's 2017-2019 ACS analysis, ninth among U.S. metros.

Common coach itineraries

Los Angeles - Las Vegas - Grand Canyon South Rim (3-4 days)

U.S. trade authorities list Los Angeles and Las Vegas among the most popular destinations for Korean visitors, and national parks are among the activities they favor.

LegMilesDrive time
Los Angeles → Las Vegas270~4.5 h
Las Vegas → Grand Canyon South Rim278~4.5 h
  • Hours quoted are passenger-car estimates; a loaded coach with rest stops takes longer, so each leg should be treated as a half-day or more of driving.
  • Under the federal passenger-carrier limit, a driver may drive at most 10 hours after 8 consecutive hours off duty and may not drive after 15 hours on duty (49 CFR 395.5), so a Las Vegas-to-Grand Canyon day leaves little room for added side trips.
  • Grand Canyon National Park states that Commercial Use Authorizations are required for road-based tours; its public directory lists authorized companies (ask the operator which authorization applies to the group): https://www.nps.gov/grca/getinvolved/cua-list.htm

San Francisco - Yosemite - Los Angeles (4-5 days)

San Francisco, Los Angeles and national parks are all named by trade authorities among favored destinations and activities for Korean visitors.

LegMilesDrive time
San Francisco → Yosemite National Park195~4.5 h
Yosemite National Park → Los Angeles313~6 h
  • NPS lists 195 miles and 4-5 hours from San Francisco and 313 miles and about 6 hours from Los Angeles (via Highway 41).
  • NPS notes that some Yosemite roads close from November through May or June, tire chains may be required October through April, and Tioga Road typically closes in October, so season matters for coach routing.
  • NPS advises relying on road signs rather than GPS units in the park.

Los Angeles - San Francisco coastal-to-Bay link (1 long travel day)

Los Angeles and San Francisco are both on the trade.gov list of cities most popular with Korean visitors, so groups often join them in one trip.

LegMilesDrive time
Los Angeles → San Francisco383~5.5 h
  • A 383-mile leg at a car-average speed of 70 mph is about 5.5 hours before stops; the 10-hour driving limit is not the constraint, but a 15-hour on-duty day can be if sightseeing is added at both ends.

Las Vegas - Zion National Park (day trip or overnight)

Trade authorities list national parks and Las Vegas among favored activities and destinations for Korean visitors, and Zion is about 160 road miles from Las Vegas.

LegMilesDrive time
Las Vegas → Zion National Park160~2.5 h
  • NPS states that large vehicles are not permitted on the Zion-Mt. Carmel Highway between Canyon Junction and the East Entrance, and that a detour of about 150 miles is needed; the park has over 20 large-vehicle parking spaces near the visitor center: https://www.nps.gov/zion/planyourvisit/directions.htm

New York - Washington DC - Niagara Falls - Boston (5-7 days)

A New York-area Korean-language operator publishes a 7-day eastern U.S. and Canada coach tour covering Washington DC, Niagara Falls, Toronto, Montreal, Quebec City, Boston and Manhattan, departing from Flushing, Manhattan or Fort Lee.

LegMilesDrive time
New York → Washington DC225~4 h
Washington DC → Niagara Falls403~5.8 h
New York → Boston215~3.1 h
  • Washington DC to Niagara Falls is about 403 road miles, which on its own approaches a full driving day for a coach.
  • If the route crosses into Canada, passengers need documents for the border crossing; ask the operator and each passenger's own consulate or CBP about requirements.
  • I-95 between New York and Washington is described as one of the busiest East Coast corridors; weekday rush hours (7-9 AM and 4-7 PM) extend drive times (howlongdrive.com page above).

Seattle - Mount Rainier (day trip)

Seattle is on the trade.gov list of cities popular with Korean visitors, and national parks are a favored activity.

LegMilesDrive time
Seattle → Mount Rainier National Park60~1.5 h
  • NPS states the Longmire-to-Paradise road closes nightly from November 1 through winter and tire chains are required in winter; Chinook Pass and some entrances are summer-only: https://www.nps.gov/mora/planyourvisit/directions.htm

Dates that fill up coaches

  • Chuseok (Korean harvest holiday) · Set by the lunar calendar: September 24-26 in 2026 and September 14-16 in 2027 (South Korean public-holiday dates).

A multi-day holiday in Korea can bring extended families and visiting relatives together in the U.S.; groups sometimes plan shared outings or community and church gatherings around it, so coach requests may cluster in late September.

Los Angeles Korean Festival (free, Seoul International Park), Los Angeles, October 1-4, 2026 (Thursday-Sunday, 10 AM-10 PM)

  • Seollal (Korean Lunar New Year) · Lunisolar; February 17 in 2026. The holiday spans three days.

Family gatherings are central to Seollal; U.S.-based families and visiting relatives may arrange group outings during the break.

  • Autumn Korean festival season · Late September to mid-October in recent years

Several large festivals fall within a few weeks of each other, and groups from churches, schools and associations may charter coaches to attend and to avoid limited parking.

Korean Parade & Festival (organized by the Korean American Association of Greater New York), New York, NY (Sixth Avenue, 27th-38th Streets in 2025), Saturday, October 4 in 2025; Wikipedia describes it as held on the first Saturday of October · Korean Festival (Korean Festival Foundation), Sugarloaf Mills, Lawrenceville, GA, October 4-5 in 2025 · Taste of Korea in Chicago (IYF Chicago), Lincolnwood, IL, September 21 in 2025

  • Korean American Day · January 13 each year

Community organizations and congregations may hold commemorative events; the date marks the 1903 arrival of the first Korean immigrants in Honolulu.

  • Church conferences and retreat season · Varies by denomination and congregation

The National Council of Korean Presbyterian Church coordinates annual national conferences and specialized regional gatherings, and about 59% of Korean-alone adults in the U.S. are Christian, mostly Protestant, which is why church groups are a recurring source of multi-coach requests.

US rules and practicalities

Driver hours on multi-day tours

Federal rules for passenger-carrying drivers allow no more than 10 hours of driving after 8 consecutive hours off duty, and no driving after 15 hours on duty following 8 consecutive hours off duty. Weekly caps are 60 hours in 7 days or 70 hours in 8 days depending on the carrier's schedule. On long legs such as Washington DC to Niagara Falls (about 403 miles) or Las Vegas to the Grand Canyon (about 280 miles), sightseeing stops count toward the on-duty window, so itineraries should leave margin or add an overnight.

Airport arrivals for groups from Korea

Korean citizens traveling to the U.S. for tourism for 90 days or less generally use the Visa Waiver Program (South Korea has participated since 2008), which requires ESTA approval before travel; CBP officers still decide admission on arrival. Groups landing at a major airport such as LAX should confirm that the charter operator holds the airport's ground transportation permit: LAWA says it licenses over 2,500 private ground transportation companies at LAX, including charter buses, and charter-party operators must hold a TCP permit. Allow time for immigration, baggage and customs before a coach pickup is timed.

Tipping the driver and guide in the U.S.

Tipping is customary but not legally required. One charter-industry guide suggests roughly $5-$15 per passenger per day or $50-$150 per day on multi-day trips, and $2-$5 per passenger for a half-day trip; amounts vary by operator and group. Visitors from Korea, where tipping is not the norm, may want a group leader to collect contributions in advance and hand them over together, and to ask the operator whether a gratuity is already included in the quote.

Church and congregation group logistics

Korean-American congregations can be large: Korean Central Presbyterian Church in Centreville, VA reports about 4,600 weekly attendees. For retreats and conferences, a group usually needs to settle headcount, luggage and any mobility needs early, because coaches seat about 40-56 passengers and mini coaches 18-35; one guide advises leaving 10-15 percent of seats open on trips over two hours.

Checking an operator before booking

FMCSA's Look Before You Book guidance says to confirm that a motorcoach company has a USDOT number, operating authority and liability insurance, and to review its federal rating (Satisfactory, Conditional or Unsatisfactory) using the company's DOT number.

National park rules for coaches

Park rules differ and change by season: Grand Canyon requires Commercial Use Authorizations for road-based tours; Zion bars large vehicles from the Zion-Mt. Carmel Highway tunnel segment; Yosemite and Mount Rainier have seasonal road closures. Ask the operator to confirm the current rules for the travel dates.
